Plant Foods And Organic Fertilizers
Here are five action ideas that you can use today as plant foods and organic fertilizers.
To improve the nutrition of their plants, most gardeners use fertilizers. Most traditonal fertilizers are not suitable, however, if you want to grow your plants organically. Most of these chemicals can affect the world around us negatively and can be damaging to our health, that of our loved ones and our pets. If you want to avoid using chemicals in your garden, you do not have to stop using fertilizers since there are many different organic fertilizers that you can use.
Here are a few of these choices and how to use them to help you maintain your garden healthy:
Compost: By using compost it will not only help you to reduce the amount of fertilizer that you need for your garden but it can also help you to get rid of most of the waste from your garden and kitchen. If you add compost to the soil in your garden, it will add nutrients to your plants, help to improve the drainage system and help the plants immune system to thrive. If you are not already using compost in your garden now is the time to start doing so as this is one of the best and easiest ways to improve the health of your plants.
Bat Guano: Bat guano is a great natural fertilizer that has been used by gardeners for over hundred of years. This natural product is high in phosphorus and other vital nutrients that your plants need for healthy growth. However, when you are harvesting natural bat guano you should be very careful not to disturb the bat colonies because this can cause them to starve to death.
Try to find bat guano that has been gathered in a sustainable way and certified by an organization that caters to the bats.
Fish Meal: Fish meal is another good natural fertilizer that you can use on your plants.
This natural product contains a high level of organic nitrogen and phosphorus and other important elements that can work quickly and effectively to help your plants to grow healthy. However, ethical vegetarians and other groups who are opposed to fishing may have strong objections to the use of fish meal as fertilizer.
Kelp Meal: Kelp meal is a natural fertilizer that is produced from dried ground brown seaweed that has been harvested from the colder regions of the ocean.
This fertilizer is used to condition the soil and is an excellent organic fertilizer that can help your plants to maintain a high level of essential minerals.
Kelp meal works very well on your plants by releasing nutrients slowly over time. It comes from renewable plant sources.
Manure: Manure that is obtained from large herbivorous animals such as horses, cows and sheep is very good for your garden and is an old traditional organic fertilizer that has been used for many, many years.
Fresh manure can be very damaging to your plants so you should make sure that you use composted manure.
This product is usually very cheap and you may even be able to obtain it free of cost from the right source. If you do not have a tilled garden you can apply the manure on the surface of the soil, but if your garden is tilled you should make sure the manure is tilled into the soil before planting, in the same way that you would use compost.
This is definitely not an exhaustive list, but these are good plant foods and organic fertilizers.
Using organic fertilizers is one good way of practicing green living.
